Throughout Tyrells career he and Xavier stayed together as they traveled and trained side by side in training camps across the country. Xaviers talent became even more fine tuned during these years as he performed as sparring partner with legendary champions Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker, Johnny Bumphus, and John David Jackson, to name a few. With such surroundings one would assume Xavier to have been satisfied in his experiences, but to him there was much more room to learn and expand in boxing. His time at camp was more than a training experience. He wanted to experience training. After nearly six years in camp, he had absorbed every ounce of wisdom and knowledge dished out within his earshot among the trainers. He studied their words, their philosophies, their rituals, and their styles. In 1988 he set aside his set of tailor made gloves and gear, picked up a sturdy set of handpads, and moved to Atlanta to begin a new career as a trainer. In fact, with great sentiment and accomplishment, Xavier turned over his well traveled boxing equipment to the first professional fighter he trained, Raul Fernandez.
